Giovanni Pellacani practices research mainly in the field of cutaneous physiopathology, skin bio-engineering for the evaluation of inflammatory diseases, non invasive diagnosis in dermato-oncology, since 1995. In particular, melanoma and pigmented skin lesions, their early identification by means of dermoscopy in combination with system for image analysis and automated diagnosis, and in vivo reflectance-mode confocal scanning laser microscopy for the study of cytological and architectural aspects of the skin and of skin lesions, in correlation with dermoscopy and histopathology are the present fields of research. Since 2003, his main research interest is in the field of in vivo confocal microscopy for the diagnosis and characterization mostly of skin cancer. Melanoma features have been described and validated. An algorithm for distinction between benign melanocytic lesions and melanoma was developed. Different types of melanoma and their characteristic features were described. Characteristic aspects of benign melanocytic lesions, such as common nevi, Spitz nevi and dysplastic nevi, have been found. Dermoscopic and histopathologic correlates have been found and evaluated on large series of images.
He is organizing and teaching in confocal courses organized on regular basis of 4 per years for Europe, and he was also teaching in 5 confocal courses in US in the last 3 years.
So far, Pellacani has published over 300 papers, including >200 articles present in the “Science Citation Index” with an overall Impact Factor of over 500 points (H-index = 38, source: google scholar), 20 book chapters and over 200 abstracts presented in national and international congresses and conferences.
